Studio of Sir Peter Lely makes more than four times estimate.

A portrait of a Lady by the studio of Sir Peter Lely, possibly Louise de Keroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth (1649-1734) recently sold at auction in Lawrences of Somerset for £36,000.00 sterling. The portrait was estimated at between £5,000.00 and £8,000.00 however, strong interest on the day meant that the painting realised more than four times the estimate.

Oil on canvas, it is three quarter length portrait, the Lady wearing a russet dress with white sleeves and a pale grey mantle all measuring approximately 48 inches high and 40 inches wide. In the O'Sullivan Antiques Dublin store we have a very similar portrait, from the same studio, slightly larger in size, also of a lady (unindentified as yet) for sale. Please see our Dublin website for more details. Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680), originally from Holland but spent almost all his life in England, was a very well known prolific portrait painter, indeed he was the prominant painter to the court at this time.
