Studio of Sir Peter Lely portrait makes more than four times estimate
A portrait of a Lady by the studio of Sir Peter Lely, possibly Louise de Keroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth (1649-1734) recently sold at auction in Lawrences of Somerset for £36,000.00. The portrait was estimated at between £5,000.00 and £8,000.00 however strong interest on the day meant the painting realised more than four times the estimate. Oil on canvas, it is a three quarter length portrait, the lady wearing a russet dress with white sleeves and a pale grey mantle all measuring 122.5cm high by 99.5 cm wide. Here in O'Sullivan Antiques we have a similar portrait , from the same studio, slightly larger in size and also of a lady but her identity is as yet unknown, see our website in the paintings section for more details. Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) was a  prolific portrait painter  originally from Holland but spent most of his life in England and indeed became the prominant painter to the court.
